Walker Guess: Violence, War, and Tragedy

Participating in this year-long challenge has resulted in reconnecting with several members of my extended family. Sometimes these family members request I write about certain ancestors, and this week’s post was such a request. My grandfather’s half-niece Wanda Davis Collins thought Walker Guess would be an interesting tale. Walker is my 3x-great-grandfather and Wanda’s great-grandfather. He definitely fits with the “tragedy” theme, as he saw — and was a victim of — much violence during his life.

1 Oct 1838: Moses Guest, Revolutionary War Veteran, Dies in Franklin County, Georgia

TombstoneMy 5x great-grandfather Moses Guest died 179 years ago today — on October 1, 1838 — at the age of 88.  He was a veteran of the Cherokee-American wars and the American Revolution.

Moses was born January 3, 1750, in Prince William County (now Fauquier County), Virginia, the second son of William Guest and Susannah Cockney.  His family moved to the Yadkin River region of Wilkes County, North Carolina, in his youth.    Continue reading 1 Oct 1838: Moses Guest, Revolutionary War Veteran, Dies in Franklin County, Georgia
